This workshop, which complements core O4P programs, will focus on two crucial building blocks of getting your campaign strategy right: identifying the right targets and “seeing the matrix” of structure, whatever your organizing context. The booster session will focus on supporting community and movement groups (as well as other “self-selecting organizations”) attempting to implement methods from core O4P programming.
Sometimes your organizing structures and targets are self-evident… and sometimes they’re not.
The O4P approach is based on using workplaces as structures to build supermajorities to pressure clear targets. Many non-labor campaigning groups struggle to apply these methods because they cannot identify their structure or their target. Instead, many of these groups adopt a “mobilizing approach”: focused on awareness raising, demands for policy change, and broad calls to join actions. The people who show up are often already convinced, and the power that is built is often not sufficient for long-term structural change.
This training will help non-labor groups “see structure” and identify strategic targets in their context, allowing them to adopt an organizing approach to build the power needed to effect real change.
Drawing on examples ranging from women’s organizations to environmental movements, and including the work of groups who took Power-Up I and are struggling with these ideas, we will examine the challenges associated with applying O4P methods in a variety of contexts. In each case, we will center the need to build winning campaigns by identifying pre-existing structures, building majorities within them, and harnessing the power of these majorities to take on moveable targets with a clear Plan to Win.
This training is an invitation to take no shortcuts, helping non-labor groups – as well as anybody who is struggling to identify structures and choose targets – to shift approaches to build long-term working-class power.
